Job summary

Mass General Brigham seeks a Respiratory Therapist to provide assessment and initiation, modification, and discontinuation of therapeutic respiratory care for critically ill patients. You will analyze clinical data to determine therapy and collaborate with the medical staff on care plans.

The role requires an Associate’s Degree in Respiratory Therapy with a preference for a Bachelor’s, RRT/ Licensure, and BLS certification. Per diem on onsite shifts with variable hours.

Qualifications

  • Associate’s Degree in Respiratory Therapy is required; a Bachelor’s is preferred.
  • RRT certification preferred; Massachusetts license required or in process.
  • BLS required; NBRC certifications preferred; NALS preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Initiates and/or assists with respiratory tests and procedures as ordered to deliver appropriate care.
  • Responds to respiratory emergencies and transports ventilated patients for tests and procedures.
  • Prepares care plans and provides physician with therapy recommendations; schedules treatments and participates in rounds.
  • Administers respiratory care modalities per policies and participates in patient care rounds.
  • Performs bedside rounds and modifies treatment plan based on clinical status and response.

Job Summary

Summary

Acts as an active member of the patient care team to provide clinical patient care assessment, initiation, modification, and discontinuance of therapeutic respiratory care procedures to critically ill patients. Analyzes and evaluates clinical patient data to determine the appropriate therapy or interventions and makes recommendations on patient care plans to the medical staff.

Essential Functions
  • Initiates and/or assists with appropriate respiratory tests and procedures, as ordered, to deliver appropriate care to patients
  • Responds to respiratory emergencies and transports mechanically ventilated patients when moved from units for tests and procedures
  • Prepares appropriate care plan and makes specific recommendations to physician for indicated therapy. Schedules patient treatments as necessary and provides consultation as an active member of the patient care team
  • Manages the administration of all aspects of respiratory therapy according to respiratory care policies and procedures
  • Makes regular bedside rounds and administers Respiratory Care modalities to assigned patients. Modifies treatment care plan according to clinical picture and response to therapy
  • Participates in education of students, physicians, staff, and patients/families. Clinically supervises respiratory therapy students in the patient areas
Qualifications

Education

Associate’s Degree Respiratory Therapy required and Bachelor’s Degree Respiratory Therapy preferred

Basic Life Support [BLS Certification] - Various Issuers preferred

Registered Respiratory Therapist [RRT] - The National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC) preferred Neonatal Advanced Life Support [NALS] - American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) preferred

Respiratory Therapist [Massachusetts License] - Massachusetts Board of Respiratory Care preferred Respiratory Care Practitioner [State License] required

Experience

Respiratory Care 0-1 year preferred

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Ability to be a subject matter expert in the area of Respiratory Therapy and be able to communicate effectively with patients, team members, and other healthcare disciplines.
  • Ability to assess quickly and offer professional judgment to prepare appropriate care plan, and makes specific recommendations to physician for indicated therapy.
  • Strong communication Skills.
  • Ability to walk distances and push medical equipment weighing less than 100 pounds.
  • May also be required to stand immobile for long periods of time.
