Job description

The Respiratory Therapist performs various technical duties to administer respiratory therapy treatments to assigned patients.

This position is part of the 1199SEIU Bargaining Unit at Cooley Dickinson Hospital.

This position reports to the Clinical Manager, Respiratory Care, and operates within established organizational and departmental policies and procedures.

Minimum Requirements

• Associate degree or equivalent required
• Respiratory Therapist license in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts required
• Basic Life Support (BLS) for the Healthcare Provider certification from the American Heart Association required
• NRP from the American Academy of Pediatrics required within 3 months of hire or transfer into position
• Six months to one year of experience required

Essential Job Functions

1. Set up, apply, and administer therapy as directed, using a complete range of respiratory equipment. Control factors such as respiratory ratio, pressure, volume, oxygen and gas percentages, administer aerosol medications, and continuously monitor patient's condition.
2. Perform pulmonary consultations, make therapy recommendations, evaluate effectiveness, and report significant changes to physicians and supervisors.
3. Perform basic bedside pulmonary testing and advanced pulmonary function testing using specialized equipment to measure volumes, flows, diffusion rates, and oxygen requirements.
4. Conduct blood gas analysis techniques, oversee training of new personnel in the Blood Gas Laboratory, and perform basic sleep studies.
5. Maintain records, charts, and prepare charges. Assist in quality control and standards within the department.
6. Provide guidance and training to staff, participate as an instructor, and assist in orientation and training of new personnel.
7. Educate patients on disease processes, medications, and use of home respiratory equipment as requested.
8. Provide emergency assistance such as CPR.
9. Maintain, calibrate, and repair diagnostic and therapeutic equipment.
10. Follow all organizational policies, confidentiality, safety, infection control, and environmental standards.
11. Engage in professional development activities to stay current in the field and meet CE requirements.
12. Meet annual competency and retraining requirements.
13. Attend meetings as required.
14. Perform other duties as requested.
