Summary:
Administer and evaluate a wide variety of therapeutic and diagnostic procedures to aid in the diagnosis and treatment of primary pulmonary disease and other medical problems that may affect a patient's pulmonary status. Perform other related duties as required.
Responsibilities:
- Perform therapeutic procedures according to the Respiratory Services Policy & Procedures Manual (204-211), including:
- Intermittent positive pressure breathing
- Chest physiotherapy
- Postural drainage
- Nebulizer/aerosol therapy
- Incentive Spirometry
- Breathing exercises
- Tracheal irrigation and aspiration
Administer inhalant medications with understanding of their actions, expected responses, and adverse reactions, including:- Bronchodilators
- Mucolytics
- Antibiotics
- Wetting agents
- Steroids
- Chromalin drugs
- Anti-fungal agents
Set up and perform CPAP, Bi-Pap, and non-invasive ventilation.Provide and monitor oxygen and humidification therapy, instruct patients on equipment use, and ensure proper function and compliance with physician orders.Initiate, monitor, and provide respiratory care to patients dependent on mechanical ventilation, including adult, neonatal, and pediatric cases.Perform equipment check-out, adjust ventilatory parameters, and demonstrate knowledge of all ventilator modes.Perform airway irrigation, deep tracheal suction, and cuff care as needed.Monitor respiratory parameters, equipment function, and patient condition, including ABG analysis when authorized.Interpret and execute physician orders, review patient data, and assess therapeutic needs or contraindications.Determine appropriate therapy methods and respond to hazards or emergencies.Instruct patients on therapy rationale and procedures, monitor responses, and document findings.Evaluate patient condition changes and therapy effectiveness.Obtain and transcribe ABG results, correlate with clinical situation, and coordinate care improvements.Perform patient assessments, develop respiratory care plans, and modify therapy as needed.Use manual resuscitators correctly for all age groups.Perform diagnostic procedures such as pulmonary function screening, EKGs, oximetry, and CO2 measurements.Assist in emergency procedures, including intubation and tube positioning evaluation.Operate cardio-respiratory equipment safely and effectively.Obtain certifications for ABG performance and respiratory protocols.Assist in patient transport and provide on-the-spot respiratory care.Handle and store medical gases safely, prepare reports, and communicate with physicians regarding patient status and therapy effects.Serve as a resource for staff, physicians, and patients requiring respiratory assistance.Set daily clinical priorities, assist in staff training, and participate in community activities.If applicable, perform esophageal studies such as PH, Ambulatory Motility, or Bravo Capsule procedures.Qualifications:
- Rhode Island Respiratory Care Practitioner license (RCP), CRT required, RRT preferred.
- Associate degree from a Cardio-Respiratory Care Program.
- Current CPR certification.
