Job Description

Under the general direction of a physician and by prescription, provides respiratory therapy services and life support to patients with deficiencies and abnormalities of the cardiopulmonary system. Responsibilities are performed across all patient populations and service areas.

Shift Description

40 hours per week. Rotating schedule of 12-hour and 8-hour shifts, including days, evenings, and nights.

Responsibilities
  1. Evaluate the appropriateness of medical orders and interpret clinical data to optimize patient outcomes.
  2. Set up and operate devices such as mechanical ventilators, therapeutic gas administration systems, environmental control systems, and aerosol generators. Ensure treatment parameters like volume, gas concentration, humidity, and temperature are maintained. Administer medicinal gases and aerosol drugs, monitor equipment function, and adjust as needed to achieve optimal therapy results. Inspect and test respiratory equipment for safety and efficiency.
  3. Assist in transporting mechanically ventilated patients and respond to all code situations.
  4. Maintain patient charts with relevant identification and therapy information. Order repairs when necessary. Demonstrate respiratory care procedures to trainees and healthcare personnel. Supervise students during training.
  5. Read prescriptions, measure arterial blood gases, review patient information, and assess patient condition to determine treatment requirements, including therapy type, duration, and medication dosages. Decide on the most suitable method of inhalant administration, observe precautions, and make modifications as needed in accordance with physician’s orders.
  6. Monitor patients' physiological responses to therapy, such as vital signs, arterial blood gases, and blood chemistry. Perform bronchopulmonary drainage, assist with breathing exercises, and conduct pulmonary function tests for diagnostic purposes. Consult with physicians regarding adverse reactions.
