Job summary

Virginia Commonwealth University Health Systems is seeking a Respiratory Care Intern to provide advanced respiratory care under the supervision of a licensed respiratory therapist. The role spans ICU, acute care units, and ER, with competency-based scope and education-driven tasks.

Responsibilities include performing curriculum-approved procedures, using the respiratory care process, and assisting with ventilator management, blood gas analysis, and airway care under supervision.

Qualifications

• Currently enrolled in an accredited Respiratory Care Program within by the State of Virginia.
• Hands-on experience in hospital respiratory care settings preferred.
• BLS certification is required or preferred as per the employer.

Responsibilities

• Under supervision of a Respiratory Therapist, perform only procedures taught in the curriculum and with educators prior to hospital care.
• Apply respiratory care process (assessment, planning, implementation, evaluation) to deliver safe respiratory care.
• In inpatient settings, perform basic respiratory care tasks under RT supervision (e.g., spirometry, airway clearance, suctioning, ventilator management, blood gas analysis).
• Maintain and sterilize respiratory equipment and assist with transport of patients as needed.
• Respond to pages/codes with licensed staff and participate in special projects as assigned.
