Job description

This position performs all routine respiratory care modalities, sets up or changes oxygen equipment, participates in codes and stat calls, and performs other shift-related duties as assigned or needed.

Responsibilities

1. Administers medications and treatments: Based on patient outcomes, under appropriate supervision (60%).
2. Training and proficiency: Completes training and demonstrates proficiency in all competencies required for delivering patient services (20%).
3. Performs basic respiratory care techniques: Inhaled medication therapy, sputum inductions, aerosol and oxygen therapy, blood gas and electrolyte analysis, calibration and maintenance of blood gas analyzers, basic ventilatory parameters, sterile intratracheal aspiration.

Other Duties and Responsibilities

• Stocks and maintains respiratory care equipment.
• Sets up and tests equipment such as ventilators, bipaps, nitric oxide delivery machines, intubation and resuscitation trays.
• Makes changes to oxygen equipment and performs rounds.
• Monitors and records patient conditions, responds to codes, performs CPR, maintains airway.
• Provides patient education on diseases, medications, and treatments.
• Performs diagnostic modalities such as oximetries and ABG analysis.
• Instructs on incentive spirometers and CPT therapy devices.
• Maintains accurate records and ensures quality care.
• Learns new technical devices and procedures.
• Follows procedures for documentation and electronic medical records.
• Attends staff meetings and performs other duties as assigned.

Certifications and Licensures

Credential: BLS (Basic Life Support)

Experience: Within 1 month of hire or transfer, equivalent experience acceptable.

Other Information

Past respiratory graduates needing to complete boards are accepted. Graduates are expected to achieve NBRC CRT within 6 months and attempt RRT within 9 months, achieving RRT in no longer than 12 months.

Exposure to stressful situations, trauma, grief, and death. Able to wear PPE including latex or substitutes. Must be able to move freely, perform job functions, and have adequate vision and hearing. Frequent sitting, standing, walking, and postural changes required. Exposure to bloodborne pathogens, following safety protocols. Ability to handle multiple tasks, work independently, and maintain attendance. Overall dexterity required. Physical demand level: Medium, with lifting and carrying requirements as specified.
