Our modern and comfortable pK-12 school is located near the coast of Maine, with a total of just over 144 students. Class sizes and case loads are small, each room is rich with technology, and fellow staff members are skilled and helpful.

As a Special Education teacher, you will work with our Director of Student Services, supportive administration, general and special education colleagues, and our highly skilled staff of Ed. Techs to serve our identified students. Please see below for a detailed description of the position and responsibilities.

Certification Qualifications:

Certification as a Special Education teacher (282) or qualified to be certified within the first year.

Description:

Vinalhaven is seeking a teacher for our students in grades K-5. They are responsible for overseeing the delivery of services in students' Individualized Education Plans and providing specialized instruction to ensure that each student progresses in meeting IEP goals. The ability to relate positively to students, parents, and staff is essential to this position.

Major Responsibilities:
  • Provide evidence-based, specially designed instruction to students with IEPs to ensure that each student progresses in meeting their learning targets.
  • Serve as case manager (IEP development and process, Written Notices, academic assessments, Positive Behavioral Support Plans) and oversee each student’s IEP, ensuring compliance with requirements in the Maine Unified Special Education Regulations – Chapter 101 including timelines related to the IEP process and IEP development.
  • Supervise implementation of behavior intervention plans for students, including data collection.
  • Consult with regular education teachers on a regular basis regarding educational needs, accommodations, and modifications.
  • Collaborate with related service providers (speech therapists, OT, PT, social workers, etc.).
  • Collaborate with Behavior Analyst and Special Education Consultant regarding teaching and behavior intervention programs.
  • Communicate regularly with parents/guardians.
  • Supervise educational technicians in the program.
Support Provided:

We have a Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) who consults directly with the teacher in this position to assist with teaching and behavior intervention programs. The full-time director of special education will meet regularly with the teacher and behavior analyst of this position to troubleshoot regarding student and staff needs.
