Job summary

Maryland School for the Deaf in Columbia (Ellicott City) is seeking a Residential Child and Youth Care Practitioner to mentor deaf and hard of hearing students and support daily living skills. This on-site role involves guidance, supervision, and collaboration with staff to ensure a safe, structured environment.

The RCYCP will monitor routines, tutor students as needed, maintain confidentiality, and contribute to a positive dormitory culture under supervision.

Qualifications

• ASL fluency required for effective communication with students and families.
• One year of experience guiding deaf and hard-of-hearing youth in student life.
• Alternative: 60 college credit hours can substitute for the experience.

Responsibilities

• Maintain a safe environment and supervise students at all times.
• Mentor students, offering guidance and assimilation into deaf culture.
• Assist students with daily routines: homework, sleep, meals, hygiene.
• Observe and interact to prevent conflicts and minimize disturbances.
• Implement rewards and discipline under supervisor guidance.
• Document student problems and report to RCYCP Supervisor.
• Supplement classroom instruction with tutoring in academic subjects.
• Maintain confidentiality of students and staff information.
