Job summary

The City of Cleveland seeks a Residential Plan Examiner to review plans for one-, two-, and three-family dwellings to ensure compliance with the Cleveland Housing Code, Zoning Code, and Ohio Residential Code. The role requires holding or pursuing OBBS certifications and an Ohio driver’s license while maintaining professional registration (Architect/PE) if applicable.

Under the Commissioner of Construction Permitting, you will perform related duties and enforce building regulations, with duties

Qualifications

• Requires High School Diploma or GED.
• Requires a valid State of Ohio Driver's License.
• Must meet one of: Ohio registration as an Architect or Professional Engineer; five years of building design/construction experience; or completion of OBBS trainee program.

Responsibilities

• Examine residential construction documents for One-, Two-, and Three-Family Dwellings prior to construction for compliance with the Cleveland Housing Code, Cleveland Zoning Code, and Ohio Residential Code.
• Perform related duties enforcing building codes and maintaining certifications as required.

Job description

Residential Plan Examiner

(Formerly Plan Examiner) Under supervision of the Commissioner of Construction Permitting, examines residential construction documents of One-, Two-, and Three-Family Dwellings prior to construction for the purposes of ensuring compliance with laws, ordinances, rules, and regulations relating to construction, alteration, movement, enlargement, replacement, repair, equipment, use and occupancy, location, maintenance, removal, and demolition. Performs related duties as required that pertain to enforcement of the Cleveland Housing Code, the Cleveland Zoning Code, and the Ohio Residential Code. (Note: this classification utilizes the working titles of Residential Plan Examiner, Interim Residential Plan Examiner, and Residential Plan Examiner Trainee, depending on the certification held.) A High School Diploma or GED is required. A valid State of Ohio Drivers License is required. Must meet one of the following requirements: Ohio registration as an architect or professional engineer; Five years of experience in building design and construction for residential or non-residential buildings or structures related by the rules of the board or experience specified in section 103.3.3(2); or Successful completion of a trainee program pursuant to section 103.3.9. Residential Plan Examiner Trainee A State of Ohio Board of Building Standards (OBBS) certification as a Residential Plan Examiner Trainee is required. Interim Residential Plan Examiner OBBS certification as an Interim Residential Plan Examiner is required. Residential Plan Examiner OBBS certification as a Residential Plan Examiner is required. Must have and maintain certifications throughout employment.
