Job summary

Kempsville Center for Behavioral Health in Norfolk, VA, is seeking a Mental Health Technician to role-model positive behaviors and support patients’ treatment plans. You will help implement plans, monitor progress, and assist with crisis intervention while maintaining a safe, respectful environment.

The position requires staying calm under pressure, de-escalation skills, strong communication, and adherence to confidentiality.

Qualifications

• Associate’s degree in psychology, Human Services, Early Childhood Education, Social Sciences, or related field required.
• Alternatively, at least 6 months of direct experience with children in a therapeutic setting or QMHP-C certification with no experience.

Responsibilities

• Read and interpret treatment plans for patients/residents and develop strategies to help them learn acceptable behaviors.
• Develop and facilitate group sessions for the implementation of skill acquisition and behavior reduction plans aligned with treatment goals.
• Observe, record progress notes, and communicate with the treatment team to achieve prescribed goals.
• Assist with behavior management and crisis intervention using appropriate techniques to redirect behavior.
• Use established channels to enhance communication among staff (shift reports, team logs, meetings).
• Conduct ongoing rounding to assess patients/residents per doctor’s orders and milieu to prevent crises.
• Treat patients/residents, families, and co-workers with respect and maintain appropriate boundaries.
