Job summary

BAMSI is seeking a compassionate Residential Counselor to work in a supportive home environment. The role involves helping individuals develop connections and skills necessary for independence and success. Candidates must be knowledgeable about working with individuals with disabilities and possess interpersonal skills to facilitate positive experiences.

Qualifications

  • Must have safe driving ability and at least 3 years driving experience with a clean record.
  • Proficiency in both written and verbal English is a must.
  • Knowledge and skills for interpreting assessments and medical treatments required.

Responsibilities

  • Support individuals in developing new skills for independence and happiness.
  • Assist with Activities of Daily Living (ADL), including cooking, cleaning, and shopping.
  • Utilize Positive Behavior Supports (PBS) to create supportive environments.

RESIDENTIAL COUNSELOR

Job Duties/Responsibilities
  1. Help individuals identify interests and hobbies. Facilitate community relationships and friendships aligned with their interests.

  2. Empower individuals to advocate for themselves, make decisions, and increase independence at home and in the community.

  3. Assist with personal care tasks, including toileting, bathing, grooming, hygiene, mobility, dressing, and range of motion exercises.

  4. Support with Activities of Daily Living (ADL), such as cooking, cleaning, shopping, and money management.

  5. Use prescribed supportive and adaptive health-related equipment.

  6. Assist in developing and implementing Individual Service Plans (ISP), behavioral plans, and medication plans.

  7. Follow Department of Public Health’s (DPH) Medication Administration Program (MAP) policies, including training, administration, security, and documentation.

  8. Utilize Positive Behavior Supports (PBS) to create a supportive environment reflecting individuals’ preferences and goals.

  9. Learn and use communication tools such as email, tablets, and letter boards, tailored to individual needs. Communicate in preferred methods and languages.

  10. Assist with community access, including transportation to day programs, work, medical appointments, visits, and recreation activities.

Job Requirements

Must perform all essential duties satisfactorily. Requirements include:

  • Knowledge of working with individuals with developmental and/or physical disabilities.

  • Proficiency in English, both written and verbal.

  • Ability to interpret assessments and medical treatments.

  • Safe driving ability.

  • Interpersonal skills.

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office.

Education/Licensure Requirements
  • High school diploma or equivalent.

  • Certified Nursing Assistant, Associate’s, or Bachelor’s degree preferred.

  • Valid driver’s license, a clean driving record, and at least 3 years of driving experience. Proof required upon hire and as requested.

  • If using own vehicle for transportation, appropriate insurance coverage is required.

  • Ability to lift, push, pull, and maneuver 25-75 pounds.

  • Ability to reach, bend, stand, sit, and walk.

  • Repetitive movements of wrists, hands, and fingers.
