The Salvation Army in Richmond, VA seeks a Full Time Regular Shelter Support Worker to help ensure the safety, comfort, and wellbeing of emergency shelter clients. This role requires monitoring client activity, enforcing house rules, and coordinating evening and overnight operations.

Candidates should have a High School Diploma or GED and ideally one year of security or social service experience; CPR/First Aid is preferred. Light housekeeping and log maintenance are part of daily duties.

Salary Range: $13.00 - $14.00 Hourly

Schedule/Hours: M – F 4:00 P.m. – 12:00 a.m. (40 hours per week)

Pay Rate: $13-$14 per hour

This position is responsible for:

Performs a wide variety of support functions to ensure the safety, security, comfort and wellbeing of Salvation Army emergency shelter clients. Ensures shelter clients adhere to house rules. Monitors building security. Performs light housekeeping duties to ensure orderly, clean common areas. Maintains the daily shelter log. Typically works a non-traditional schedule of evening and overnight shifts.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Monitors the activities of shelter clients, ensuring their safety, comfort, and compliance with house rules.
  • Supports inclement weather shelter operations, to include preparing sleeping and dining areas prior to shelter opening; maintaining an orderly client check-in waiting line; conducting the client intake process; distributing items for clients’ personal use like blankets; cleaning the sleeping and dining areas as needed throughout the shift.
  • Regulates lights out/curfew/quiet hours for the safety and comfort of shelter clients.
  • Responds to emergencies in a calm manner and initiates appropriate corrective actions in accordance with established policies and procedures.
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:

Work is performed in a shelter facility where there are little or no physical discomforts associated with changes in weather or discomforts associated with noise, dust, dirt, and the like.

  • Ability to meet attendance requirements.
  • Ability to read, write, and communicate the English language.
  • Ability to respond to emergency situations quickly and calmly while maintaining control and initiating the proper corrective action.
  • Ability to perform combinations of sitting, standing, and walking on a frequent change basis. Distance of travel is usually within the same building.
  • Limited amount of physical effort required associated with walking, standing, lifting and carrying light objects (less than 25 lbs.) 5-10% of work time.

WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR IN YOU

Any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
