Position Summary: The primary goal of the Residential Assistant (RA) is to provide appropriate services and support to the Emergency Shelter residents, guests, and visitors. These services may include supportive listening, assistance with shelter activities, and completing intakes. The position involves providing direct services to shelter residents, overseeing daily operations of the emergency shelter program, providing resources, de-escalation, scheduling transportation, assisting with move-in and departure procedures, and ensuring rooms are clean and ready for new residents. The Residential Assistant is responsible for delivering excellent service through active listening and support in both telephonic and face-to-face interactions. The RA should be patient, knowledgeable, empathetic, and helpful.
Full-Time and Part-Time shifts for this position are:
Full-Time:
- Monday - Friday, 4:00pm - 12:00am
- Monday - Friday, 8:00am - 4:00pm
Part-Time:
- Saturday & Sunday; 4:00pm - 12:00am
- Saturday & Sunday; 12:00am - 8:00am
Primary Responsibilities:
- Respond to shelter residents' needs.
- Conduct weekly and regular room checks, notify supervisor of room status, and follow up.
- Support shelter residents, guests, and visitors during shifts.
- Document unusual incidents.
- Send end-of-shift emails to the Director of Homeless Services and Shelter Group email, updating on shift events, and complete the Shift Log accurately.
- Document resident activities and issues for follow-up in the shelter log.
- Ensure residents have necessary supplies.
- Perform security checks throughout the building.
- Facilitate residents in completing chores.
- Complete intake for new residents.
- Oversee client activities to ensure smooth shifts.
- Proactively plan for guest needs or concerns when possible.
- Provide direct support services to residents as needed.
- Reconcile petty cash at the beginning and end of shifts.
- Ensure the program meets all quality and outcome metrics.
- Work independently with confidence and maintain professionalism.
- Adhere to shelter policies, procedures, and schedules.
- Arrive on time and dressed appropriately.
- Be mature, empathetic, flexible, and adaptable.
- Participate in shift briefings and debriefings.
- Maintain cleanliness of the lobby, EOS room, and common areas, disinfect as needed.
- Restock supplies in the shelter offices as necessary.
- Ensure the shelter office is clean and organized for incoming shifts.
- Assist in training new staff.
- Complete required trainings by Grassroots Crisis Intervention.
- Utilize technology effectively, including phones, computers, and email.
Secondary Responsibilities:
- Accept and organize community donations.
- Participate in committees as requested.
- Assist with training and orientation of new staff.
- Help serve and clean up after meals.
- Engage in additional duties as assigned.
- Show enthusiasm for Grassroots' mission.
- Read and respond to all email communications promptly.
- Participate in supervision, training, and staff meetings.
- Maintain positive working relationships and group morale.
- Complete timesheets and leave requests punctually.
- Use appropriate communication channels to resolve conflicts.
- Interact professionally with staff, clients, and visitors.
Education and Experience:
- AA degree and 1 year of experience in human services or a related field preferred.
- Valid driver’s license required.
- Knowledge of homelessness issues is a plus.
- CPR and First Aid certification required or to be obtained within 15 days of hire.
Skills and Abilities:

Work Conditions:
- Share office space with staff such as Residential Assistants, Shift Supervisors, and Case Managers.
- Holiday and evening shifts depending on schedule.
- Flexible hours to meet program needs.
- Ability to lift up to 25 lbs.
