Job summary

Qualifications

Position Overview

The Research Technician I (Temporary/Casual), under general supervision, performs technical support involving performance of routine tasks for the South Texas Lion Project, part of the Spatial and Population Ecology of Carnivores (SPEC) Lab and Patton Center for Deer Research at the Caesar Kleberg Wildlife Research Institute. Housing on ranches in Maverick, Dimmit and Webb Counties will be provided as part of this opportunity. Anticipated term for project is from December 1, 2026-April 30, 2027.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Core Duties

• Primarily assist our capture team with trapping and collaring efforts under the supervision of the program manager and graduate students

• Maintain camera traps for the purpose of scouting new ranches and determining lion presence

• Scout and interpret mountain lion sign (e.g. tracks, scrapes, and scats) in support of trapping efforts

• Track collared mountain lions using telemetry and investigate GPS clusters

• Collect and organize mountain lion scat and other biological samples

Qualifications

Required Education

High school diploma or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Required Experience

Two Year of related experience.

Required Licenses and Certifications

US driver’s license

Preferred Qualifications

Working towards or completed a B.S. degree in Wildlife Biology, Wildlife Management, Conservation Biology, Ecology, or related fields.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Knowledge and ability to navigate by foot off trail in remote settings.

• Ability to multitask and work cooperatively with others.

• Ability to work independently in the field within both private, state, and federal lands.

• Ability to communicate clearly with superiors.

• Ability to record and organize information.

Physical Requirements

• Ability to lift heavy objects and exert heavy force

• Ability to hike several miles a day carrying equipment over uneven terrain with thick vegetation

• Ability to work in the field with >90° heat in thick, thorny brush habitat

• This position is security sensitive

• This position will require export-control authorization prior to starting employment.

• This position requires compliance with state and federal laws/codes and Texas A&M University System/TAMU policies, regulations, rules and procedures

• All tasks and job responsibilities must be performed safely without injury to self or others in compliance with System and University safety requirements

• This position may require work beyond normal office hours and/or work on weekends not exceeding 40-hour work week.

Additional Information
