Job description

The University of Virginia, Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, School of Engineering and Applied Sciences, is seeking applicants for a Research Scientist position. The primary responsibilities for this position include research, scholarship, and service to the department, university, and professional community. The compensation will be commensurate with experience and qualifications.

About the Department

The Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) Department at UVA offers a vibrant environment for interdisciplinary research and collaboration, with strengths in areas such as machine learning, imaging, cyber-physical systems, embedded systems, communication networks, and sensor systems. Faculty benefit from access to cutting-edge facilities and are encouraged to engage in research addressing societal challenges.

Responsibilities

The successful candidate is expected to establish an innovative research program building on UVA’s strengths in signal processing, machine learning, and education. This includes collaborating with faculty and scientists at UVA and beyond, generating research proposals, promoting scholarship, engaging in service, and mentoring students. The candidate will also engage in ongoing projects with the UVA School of Education and Human Development.

Qualifications
  • A Master's or Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or Computer Science is required by the start date; a Ph.D. is preferred.
  • A strong record of an innovative research program and funded research participation, with an aptitude for mentoring graduate students.
  • Minimum of four years’ experience in computer vision, image processing, and machine learning, including at least two years developing and testing machine learning models for image analysis and computer vision.
  • Expertise in artificial intelligence, including designing, testing, and analyzing machine learning architectures.
  • Experience with image processing, image analysis, and computer vision is desirable.
