Job summary

Howard University in Washington, D.C. is seeking a qualified candidate to conduct research in bioconjugate chemistry supported by NIH funding. This role focuses on the tethering of monoclonal antibodies and peptides to polymers to create drug-loaded nanoparticles.

The successful applicant will report directly to Professor Emmanuel O. Akala, participate in regular meetings, and contribute to the lab's research and reporting duties, ensuring alignment with project deadlines and objectives.

The position offers a competitive salary range of $50,000 to $60,000, as well as professional growth opportunities.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct monthly and semi-annual reports for the project.
  • Participate in publications and grantsmanship.
  • Maintain weekly meetings with Professor Emmanuel O. Akala to discuss project developments.
  • Address any laboratory deadline challenges in weekly meetings.

Job Purpose

The project is funded by NIH, and it is a collaborative effort between Howard University Cancer Center and The Johns Hopkins University Cancer Center. The candidate will conduct research in the field of biopharmaceutical applications of nanotechnology.

Nature And Scope

Research specifically in bioconjugate chemistry involving tethering of monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) and peptides to polymers with detailed physicochemical and biological characterizations for use in the design of polymeric nanoparticles for the delivery of bioactive agents. Drug-loaded nanoparticles fabrication with detailed physicochemical and biological characterization.

Principal Accountabilities
  • Monthly reports and semi-annual reports. Publications and grantsmanship.
  • The candidate will report to Professor Emmanuel O. Akala.
  • Weekly meetings to keep Professor abreast on the developments on the project.
  • Challenges in meeting the laboratory deadlines presented to NIH should be discussed at weekly meetings so that the problems can be nipped in the bud.
Core Competencies
  • Bioconjugate chemistry (Polymer chemistry, organic chemistry, pharmaceutical sciences, etc.).
  • Biological and physicochemical characterization techniques (NMR, FTIR, HPLC (small molecule and protein analysis), LC/MS, Flow cytometry, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, zeta potential determination, Atomic Absorption Spectrometry, and MALDI-TOF Mass Spectrometry).
Minimum Requirements

Ph.D. in Polymer chemistry or Chemistry or Biomedical Engineering
