Research Program Coordinator

The Department of Neurology is seeking a Research Program Coordinator who will be responsible for coordinating clinical trials and other clinical research projects in the Johns Hopkins Multiple Sclerosis Center in the Department of Neurology. This may involve, but is not limited to, screening medical records, identifying appropriate patients, consenting study participants, performing data collection and entry, obtaining and processing specimens (e.g., blood, urine), organizing regulatory paperwork. They also will be involved in the laboratory performing routine analyses and tests on animal or human fluids and/or tissue to study the causes and pathology of Multiple Sclerosis. Work requires basic use of scientific methods, procedures and techniques gained through previous training and experience. Uses basic understanding of theory behind experiments and applies basic analytical skills to implement assigned projects, and to identify and trouble-shoot situations needing special attention.

The position reports to the MS Center’s Research Nurse, with an indirect reporting line to the faculty principal investigators of the clinical research projects.

Specific Duties And Responsibilities

  • Maintain a good working knowledge of all assigned protocols and projects and their reporting requirements and will adhere to all protocol and regulatory requirements to ensure the validity of the clinical research data.
  • Work directly with the principal investigators and other study coordinators to execute multiple study protocols. May also be involved in the amendment of existing protocols or development of new study protocols.
  • Attends clinics, screens potential participants and carries out research-related procedures with participants on a daily basis.
  • Monitor, schedule, and execute participants’ study visits and may be involved in reconciling study related invoices.
  • Manage and maintain all participant binders, study binders, and documentation for the study as well as assist the principal investigators in preparing for audits, advertising for the studies, implementing new recruitment strategies, and preparing reports for the IRB as well as handling and documenting IRB correspondence.
  • May attend educational lectures and conferences.
  • Must be willing to conduct database management.
  • Follows established protocols and employs aseptic techniques in experiments.
  • Performs blood separation, labeling, and various assays including ELISA, immunohistochemistry, flow cytometry, and MACS bead isolations.
  • Conducts separation, identification, and purification of cell populations.
  • Operates basic lab equipment (centrifuge, pH meter, analytical balance, etc.) and sophisticated instruments (flow cytometer, thermocycler, epifluorescent and confocal microscopes).
  • Utilizes lab computers for data entry and maintains accurate data records.
  • Works with rodent in vivo models, monitoring their health and maintaining records per USDA and AALAC standards; performs sacrifice and tissue dissection as needed.
  • Prepares tissue samples for study using histochemical techniques.
  • Carries out minor maintenance and adjustments on lab equipment, including calibration and alignment.
  • Prepares solutions, reagents, and stains according to standard laboratory formulas.
  • Monitors inventory levels, orders supplies per established procedures and verifies orders upon receipt.


Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in related discipline.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Some experience with Stata, ACCESS, and REDCap preferred.
  • Phlebotomy skills preferred (or willingness to learn).

Starting Salary Range: $17.20 - $30.30 HRLY (Commensurate w/exp.)

The referenced base salary range represents the low and high end of Johns Hopkins University’s salary range for this position. Not all candidates will be eligible for the upper end of the salary range. Exact salary will ultimately depend on multiple factors, which may include the successful candidate's geographic location, skills, work experience, market conditions, education/training and other qualifications. Education and Experience Equivalency

Please refer to the job description above to see which forms of equivalency are permitted for this position. If permitted, equivalencies will follow these guidelines: JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. Additional related experience may substitute for required education on the same basis. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.
