Job summary

FAR.AI in Berkeley, CA is seeking a Research Lead to develop and lead a high-impact safety research program. You will shape the research agenda, mentor a team of technical staff, and stay hands-on with coding and experiments to ensure real-world impact.

You will supervise grantmaking, collaborate with AI labs and governments, and publish findings to influence policy and practice. The role offers strong autonomy in an impact-driven environment.

Qualifications

• Strong existing research track record in AI safety.
• Ability to articulate a clear research agenda with theory of change.
• Experience leading teams and mentoring researchers.
• Experience writing grant proposals and collaborating with external partners.

Responsibilities

• Define a research agenda with a clear theory of change for mitigating catastrophic risks from AI systems.
• Grow and lead a team of technical staff in pursuit of this agenda.
• Lead novel research projects with ambiguous progress markers.
• Share research findings through publications and presentations to drive adoption and change.
• Mentor and coach junior team members in research skills and ML engineering.
• Contribute to the FAR.AI intellectual environment by giving feedback on early-stage proposals.
• Build a research field around your agenda through FAR.AI's grantmaking and events.
