FAR.AI in Berkeley, CA seeks a Research Lead to define and own a research workstream that mitigates catastrophic risks from advanced AI. You’ll grow and mentor a team of technical staff, stay hands-on to write code and run experiments, and steer multi‑million dollar grantmaking to external researchers.

Beyond your team, you’ll guide independent testing with governments and AI labs, publish findings, present at ML conferences, and shape FAR.AI’s broader research agenda toward impactful, scalable

Qualifications

• Proven track record in AI safety or closely related field.
• Experience leading research teams or large-scale projects.
• Ability to articulate a clear research agenda and theory of change.
• Experience writing grant proposals and collaborating with external researchers.

Responsibilities

• Articulate a research agenda with a clear theory of change for mitigating catastrophic AI risks.
• Grow and lead a team of technical staff, directly or with an engineering co-lead.
• Lead novel research projects with ambiguous success markers and impact.
• Publish findings in academic venues, blogs, and policy briefs; present at conferences.
• Mentor and coach junior researchers in research skills and ML engineering.
• Build FAR.AI's research field through grantmaking, events, and external collaborations to drive deployment.
