Job summary

University of Virginia is seeking a Laboratory Safety Consultant to support safe and compliant research, education, and support services across the UVA community. The role emphasizes collaboration with the Chemical and Laboratory Safety team to promote best practices in safety and regulatory compliance.

The successful candidate will perform inspections, provide guidance on chemical safety, and assist in training program development, travel for off-site facilities, and ongoing safety improvements

Qualifications

• Education and experience requirements: Bachelor's degree; or Associates with four years’ work experience or High School diploma with six years’ work experience.
• Licensure: Must have a valid driver’s license with zero or positive points balance and at least two years of driving experience.
• Preferred qualifications include related field degree and experience in laboratory or health sciences.

Responsibilities

• Conduct routine laboratory inspections and consultations to assess compliance with chemical, laboratory safety, and hazardous waste regulations.
• Advise on laboratory relocation and decommissioning procedures, including hazard identification and material handling.
• Review chemical inventory and encourage compliance by identifying deficiencies and recommending corrective actions.
• Investigate incidents and develop corrective action recommendations to prevent recurrences.
• Assist in development and maintenance of training programs and safety resources.
