Job summary

The University of Virginia's Office of Environmental Health and Safety seeks a Laboratory Safety Consultant to promote safe and compliant research, education, and support services. The role partners with faculty, staff, and students to identify hazards and apply best practices in chemical and laboratory safety.

Reporting to the Assistant Director of Research Safety, you will conduct inspections, advise on chemical inventory, support training programs, and help with hazardous materials handling

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree; or Associate's with four years' work experience; or High School diploma with six years' work experience.
  • Must have a valid driver's license with zero or positive points and at least two years of driving experience.
  • Experience in laboratory safety or EH&S context is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct routine laboratory inspections and consultations for chemical and lab safety compliance.
  • Provide guidance on laboratory relocation, decommissioning, and hazardous material handling.
  • Advise on chemical inventory management and data review for program effectiveness.
  • Investigate incidents and develop corrective action recommendations.
  • Support development and maintenance of safety training resources and website content.
