The Opportunity:

The Utilities and Engineering team within Facilities and Business Operations is seeking a Research Lab Controls Technician II to support maintenance, repair, and optimization of lab control systems in research and cleanroom environments. This role ensures proper functioning of BAS (Building Automation Systems), HVAC, and mechanical/electronic systems, while upholding safety standards. The position also involves training users, managing inventory, and supporting diagnostic and research procedures to maintain high-performance laboratory environments.

Responsibilities:
  • Perform preventive and corrective maintenance on laboratory fume hoods, air compressors, and research systems, focusing on BAS controls to ensure optimal performance and safety compliance.
  • Troubleshoot and maintain BAS-integrated HVAC systems and components, including air valves, dampers, louvers, motors, fans, controllers, sensors, drives, and compressors (reciprocating, scroll, screw, oil-less).
  • Conduct routine maintenance and repair of lab equipment and infrastructure, escalating complex issues as needed.
  • Collaborate with research staff and lab managers to resolve equipment issues, provide technical support, and promote best practices.
  • Monitor and support compliance with lab safety protocols, including handling and disposal of hazardous materials.
  • Coordinate with facilities teams for resource requests, work orders, and contribute to reports and assessments.
  • Maintain detailed documentation of maintenance activities, repairs, inventory, and system performance.
  • Assist in developing and updating maintenance schedules; suggest equipment upgrades.
  • Instruct faculty, staff, and students on safe and effective equipment use and maintenance.
  • Provide technical support to other trades as needed.
Minimum Qualifications:

High School Diploma or Equivalent + 4+ years relevant experience, or an equivalent combination as per Fla. Stat. 112.219. More info

Preferred Qualifications:
  • 4+ years experience in HVAC, BAS, or lab environmental controls in research/cleanroom settings.
  • Ability to troubleshoot and repair BAS controls and components like VFDs, compressors, air dryers, vacuum systems.
  • Experience in academic, research, or medical institutions maintaining controlled environments.
  • Knowledge of calibration, maintenance, and safety protocols for lab equipment.
  • Ability to interpret schematics, diagrams, and manuals.
  • Strong organizational skills, with experience in maintenance logs and inventory management.
  • Effective communication skills for training and support.
  • Experience coordinating with multidisciplinary teams and contributing to facilities planning.
  • Knowledge of OSHA, NFPA, and safety standards.
  • Certifications such as ASHRAE 110, NEBB Fume Hood Testing, UL 1805, OSHA 29 CFR 1910.1450.
Health Assessment Required:

Completion and passing of a physical exam per UCF policy.

Application Instructions:

The anticipated hourly range is $26.83 to $35.89. Final salary depends on qualifications and experience. The work schedule may vary. A Level II background check and valid Class E driver’s license are required. The position involves travel to various campus locations.
