Position Summary:

The Research Grants and Contracts Director will lead and oversee all aspects of research grants and contracts management within the Craig Research Department. This role will be responsible for managing the entire life cycle of research funding, including proposal preparation, submission, award administration, and close-out. The Director will work closely with Research Scientiststo ensure timely and accurate support for financial management, compliance with regulations, and strategic planning. Additionally, the Director will play a key role in developing processes and systems that enhance efficiency, ensuring that all grant and contract activities are in line with federal, state, and institutional guidelines.

A critical aspect of this role involves supporting the organization during internal and external audits by maintaining accurate and organized documentation related to grants and contracts. The Director will ensure all necessary records are up-to-date and accessible for annual audits, safeguarding the department’s compliance and financial integrity.

This position will collaborate with the Business Office to manage budgets, financial reporting, and personnel coordination related to research awards, and annual audit requests. The Director will also contribute to departmental planning by monitoring resource allocation, contribute to departmental planning by guiding staffing needs, and policy development. As the research portfolio expands, the Director will ensure continuous improvement in research administration, facilitate collaboration with internal and external stakeholders, and provide critical support to research leadership in achieving the department's goals.

Position Requirements:

Licensure/Certification/Registrations:Certified Research Administrator (CRA) required.

Education:BS/BA degree required. Bachelors in business, accounting or finance are preferred.

Experience:7-10 years' experience managing federal grants (NIH, DoD, NIDILRR) is required with significant expertise in sponsored research administration. Demonstrated success in proposal development, contract negotiation, and award management is strongly preferred. Experience leading teams and managing complex research portfolios is required.

  • Extensive knowledge of federal policies, including 2 CFR 200 (Uniform Administrative Requirements, Cost Principles, and Audit Requirements for Federal Awards), FAR, NIH Policies and Procedures, and other regulatory frameworks.
  • Strong leadership and management skills, with the ability to mentor, guide, and oversee a team, ensure high performance and professional development.
  • Proven ability to implement policies, streamline processes, and drive continuous improvements in grant and contract administration.
  • Excellent project management skills, with a demonstrated capacity to prioritize tasks, meet deadlines, and manage complex research portfolios.
  • The ability to collaborate effectively across departments and with external agencies.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to present complex financial and regulatory information clearly to stakeholders.
  • The ability to work under pressure, meet tight deadlines, and manage multiple priorities in a dynamic environment.
  • Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and a customer service-oriented mindset.
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office and familiarity with grant management software.

Essential Functions:

  • Provides strategic leadership and oversight of all aspects of grant and contract management, ensuring alignment with the goals of the Research Department and institutional priorities.
  • Lead the development and continuous improvement of processes related to grant submission, award administration, financial tracking, and compliance to maximize efficiency and effectiveness.
  • Collaborate closely with Research Scientistsand research leadership to ensure alignment of grant activities with project goals, budgetary requirements, and regulatory guidelines.
  • Overseeing the financial management of grants and contracts, including monitoring expenditures, reviewing financial reports, and ensuring timely and accurate reporting to funding agencies.
  • Guide resource allocation across research projects, including personnel assignments and budget adjustments, to ensure optimal use of available resources.
  • Serve as a key advisor to Research Department leadership on grant compliance, financial oversight, and research funding strategies.
  • Foster a collaborative and supportive work environment, leading and mentoring staff to promote professional development and enhance team performance.
  • Coordinate with internal and external stakeholders, including the Business Office and external funding agencies, to resolve issues, improve processes, and ensure smooth administration of awards.
  • Ensure timely and accurate payroll allocation for research and non-research staff funded by grants, and oversee adjustments as needed.
  • Represent the Research Department on institutional committees, contributing to broader strategic initiatives and promoting the department’s interests in research administration.

Salary Range: $31.90/ Hour - $45.94/ Hour
