Job summary

Chenega Agile Real Time Solutions, LLC is seeking a Research Engineer 3 to support the Injury Biomechanics and Protection Group for USAARL. You will provide scientific, programmatic, and technical support to enable timely mission accomplishment in a flexible environment.

Responsibilities include establishing instrumentation, conducting labs and field studies, and advising on RDT&E strategies. Strong MATLAB, PMHS exposure, and data analysis skills are essential.

Qualifications

• Knowledge of injury biomechanics, mechanics, dynamics, materials strength, and math from ABET-accredited program.
• Experience in programming, data acquisition, instrumentation, motion capture, and MATLAB.
• Specialized PMHS exposure and Biosafety Level 2 policies.
• Experience with FDA/IRB approvals, mechanical testing devices, imaging tools, data acquisition equipment, and ATDs.

Responsibilities

• Serve as credentialed Associate Investigator or PI to provide research engineering support for design, preparation, execution, and analysis of studies; install and maintain instrumentation.
• Perform laboratory procedures, field studies, testing, and research activities in biomechanics-related fields.
• Design, develop, and achieve project goals by integrating scientific, engineering, and medical principles.
• Assist with documentation, SOPs, data collection, risk assessment, and safety of research assets and facilities.
• Advise PIs and study teams in RDT&E, analysis, and investigations.
• Work independently to address analytic and operational questions with creativity.
• Provide advanced services for the Injury Biomechanics RDT&E program.
• Prepare reports, presentations, manuscripts, and documentation for internal and external forums.

Responsibilities

• Serve as a credentialed Associate Investigator or Principal Investigator (PI) to provide research engineering support for research, analysis, and investigations in supporting design, preparation, execution, and analysis of studies and experimentation; selecting, installing, and maintaining instrumentation
• Performing laboratory procedures, field studies, testing, and research activities; and other scientific and administrative tasks in fields such as mechanical or biomedical engineering, injury biomechanics, biomechanics, or other related field with minimal supervision
• Use principles of and integrate aspects of scientific, engineering, and medical fields to design, develop, and accomplish project goals
• Assist with all levels of documentation, particularly engineering and technical aspects, development of testing procedures and equipment, collection of data, assessment and mitigation of risks, and evaluation and maintenance of functionality and safety of unique research assets and facilities
• Advise other Principal Investigators, Group Leadership, and study teams in administration and execution of RDT&E, analysis, and investigations
• Work independently with minimal strategic and application and with no technical direction to address analytic, theoretical, scientific, and operational questions, solve analytic and technical problems, and execution analytic, theoretical, scientific, and administrative solutions. Creativity and latitude are expected.
• Provide advanced services related to the Injury Biomechanics RDT&E program
• Provide services related to preparing reports, presentations, manuscripts, and other documentation on research progress and findings, that will be ready for distribution and presentation (by incumbent or others) within the laboratory and/or at small or large scientific forums outside of USAARL.
• Provide scientific analytical, engineering problem solving, design efforts, and experienced-based solutions related to creating, measuring, and evaluating biomechanical responses (bio-fidelity and human tolerance) for Soldier injury prevention through scientifically sound and approved protocols, policies, and/or research and test plans to ensure quality, accuracy, reproducibility, and relevance of data/ results
• Develop and write standard operating procedures (SOPs) that will ensure scientific and sound engineering principles and safety procedures are implemented and followed per USAARL and MRDC approval process and existing policies
• Provide biomedical engineering expertise in analyzing and evaluating ongoing research through data and documentation
• Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

• Knowledge of commonly-used and advanced concepts, practices, standards, and procedures within injury biomechanics, mechanics, dynamics, strengths of materials, and mathematics as demonstrated through an relevant engineering degree and coursework from an ABET accredited program and demonstrates experience and skill with a large variety of the field's concepts, practices, and procedures through publications, particularly on human head and spine injury biomechanics research and PMHS research.
• Experience in programming, data acquisition, instrumentation, kinematic and video motion capture, and use of MATLAB
• Specialized skills including exposure to Post Mortem Human Subjects (PMHS) research and Biosafety Laboratory Level 2 policies and procedures
• Demonstrated experience with the following research tool groupings: FDA and/or IRB approval process, mechanical material testing devices (including MTS products) and impact devices, biomedical imaging and imaging analysis tools (including CT, MRI, and x-rays), mathematical analysis software (MATLAB), high speed imaging and analysis tools, biomedical instrumentation (load cells, accelerometers, etc.), data acquisition equipment (high rate, high quality), biomechanical research and testing with demonstrated injury biomechanics research; PMHS (post mortem human specimen) research and data, human volunteer physiological, kinematic, and biomechanical data, and/or with ATDs (Anthropomorphic Test Devices)

• Must be able to obtain and maintain a state-issued driver’s license for independent travel to restricted meetings and field-data collection locations.
