Organization’s Mission: To fund research to find a cure for FOP while supporting, connecting, and advocating for individuals with FOP and their families, and raising awareness worldwide.
About the Organization: The International Fibrodysplasia Ossificans Progressiva (FOP) Association (IFOPA) is the leading international nonprofit organization dedicated to accelerating research initiatives and supporting those impacted by FOP, a rare, disabling genetic condition that causes bone to form in muscles, tendons, ligaments, and other connective tissues. As an organization, we work closely with patients and families, national FOP organizations around the world, and leading scientists, clinicians, and drug developers. A volunteer board of directors governs the IFOPA.
Since our founding in 1988, the IFOPA has fostered over $15 million in FOP-specific research grants, as well as built a variety of research tools and partnered with industry and academia to support the recruitment of a natural history study and 8 clinical trials. In 2014, the IFOPA founded the only scientific meeting focused on FOP – the FOP Drug Development Forum. The IFOPA also conducts its own real-world evidence and patient insights research, including the only FOP registry in the world and studies on prevalence, health literacy, and access burdens. This role is an opportunity to develop and lead the research program in an ultra-rare but scientifically prominent disease with five clinical trials in progress and active research around the world.
Position Overview: The IFOPA seeks a dynamic, collaborative, and highly motivated leader interested in rare disease research and development in academic and industry settings to focus and prioritize research and drug development investments and activities where there is the most potential for impact, and where the IFOPA has unique value to contribute.
The Research Director cultivates strong relationships with key partners, including academic researchers, clinician scientists, scientific advisors, and industry partners around the world to speed the development of treatments and increase the understanding of FOP. The Director oversees all aspects of the IFOPA’s research portfolio, including the creation and execution of the research strategy, identification and support of partnerships and collaborations, management of research grant programs, expansion and utilization of IFOPA-developed research tools like the FOP Registry, and publication of IFOPA-led research.
The Research Director is a highly motivated, creative leader dedicated to advancing FOP research to improve the lives of those living with this ultra-rare disease. The Research Director will have management experience in a dynamic and fast-paced setting. The role requires outstanding organizational, communication, and leadership skills and an ability to develop innovative solutions that push boundaries. The Research Director will work closely with the IFOPA’s Executive Director, Research Committee, and governing Board of Directors to strategize and develop short and long-term plans that usher in new levels of productivity and success for the organization.
This is a full-time exempt position supervising the Real-World Evidence Manager. The position is fully remote, but will require some travel for professional conferences, IFOPA events, and staff retreats. The ideal candidate is experienced as a senior scientific leader for a patient advocacy organization or in academia or industry. This candidate maintains both the integrity of the details and the ability to meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment. Strong interpersonal skills, collaboration, and diplomacy are needed.
