UPMC Hillman Cancer Center is seeking a staff Bioinformatics Research Specialist as part of Dr. Zarour’s laboratory at UPMC Hillman Cancer Center. The Staff Bioinformatics Research Specialist will work as a data scientist/health informaticist/bioinformatician who will lead analyses of multi-dimensional clinical or genomic datasets with a strong focus on cancer research. The incumbent will work in close collaboration with the investigators in Dr. Zarour’s laboratory faculties at the Hillman Cancer Center to oversee their high throughput omics project design, data analysis, and data presentation.
The incumbent will also be responsible for collaborative computational and informatics research projects involving methods development, novel algorithm development, and/or in-depth data analysis that facilitates and integrates implementation, visualization, and database management of multi-dimensional clinical and biological datasets generated at the Cancer Center or from public cancer databases.
Oversees analytical teams in the extraction, aggregation, and quality assurance of data from multiple clinical data depositories in support of clinical research and departmental projects. Collaborates across business units, coordinates all aspects of research data collection and project oversight, and manages the design and implementation of the project analysis plan. Prepares documents for peer-reviewed publications, presentations, and sections of grant applications.
Applies scientific methodology to conceptualize, propose, and implement appropriate methodologies for statistical analyses. Maintains and updates a centralized research awards database. Assists with grant preparations and clinical trial budgets. Develops and validates reporting data, validates data subsets of funding data, and facilitates quality control procedures to ensure data accuracy.
Operation and maintenance of complex scientific instrumentation, computer competence, effective communication, handling of rodents, pathology collection.
Little physical effort required. Duties are primarily sedentary. Will be required to move from workstation to other locations within the department, university, and UPMC. Very little heavy lifting required for this position.
