Job summary

Penn State University is seeking a Research Computing Software Engineer to join the Visualization and Decision Support Division of the Applied Research Laboratory. The role focuses on developing and maintaining software for research computing in on-site DoD/DoD-like environments, including cloud platforms and HPC.

You will lead a team of engineers and researchers, directing software projects from design to deployment, while ensuring performance and reliability in demanding computational tasks in

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree required; 6+ years of relevant experience or equivalent combination of education and experience (Scientific Computing Software Specialist, ARL).
  • Master’s degree in Geography is preferred for higher level roles.
  • Active TS/SCI clearance is preferred or advantageous.
  • Experience with DoD or government research environments is beneficial.

Responsibilities

  • Develop, deploy, enhance, and maintain software applications and tools for research computing needs.
  • Implement efficient algorithms and data structures for large datasets.
  • Write clean, well-documented code using modern programming languages.
  • Integrate software solutions with cloud and research computing infrastructure.
  • Collaborate with engineers and researchers to ensure seamless tool integration.
  • Analyze and optimize performance to meet high computational demands.
  • Identify bottlenecks, memory issues, and other technical challenges.
  • Provide troubleshooting and technical support for researchers.
  • Create comprehensive documentation for software tools and processes.
  • Stay up to date with advancements in software engineering and computational research technologies.
