Job summary

The University of Virginia Physicians Group is seeking student workers for research computing roles. You will develop teaching materials, assist in workshops, and support web updates.

Applicants should be current UVA students with programming familiarity and strong communication skills. Compensation is $18.00/hr, requiring a commitment to 20 hours/week from July 1, 2026, through Fall 2026.

Qualifications

Job description

UVA Research Computing (RC) within Information Technology Services (ITS) is seeking student workers. Our team strives to create innovative computational and data analysis solutions for researchers, building and maintaining the University's high performance computing platforms while educating the next generation of researchers on advanced computing.

What You'll Do
  • Develop new teaching materials, for example, converting tutorials written in Markdown into a series of YouTube videos and other media.
  • TA in workshops: test workshop examples, help create and test attendees' accounts, install software before workshops, and monitor communications.
  • Help with RC website updates (FAQs, short HowTos, wiki pages, etc.) and website maintenance.
  • Install scientific software, containerized applications, perform benchmarking, and document (e.g., R, Rstudio, Jupyter kernels, ML, bioinformatics tools, etc.).
  • Support RC staff with consulting requests such as code efficiency and performance tasks.
  • Assist RC staff with gathering resource metrics (user requests, workshop registration, utilization of resources, consulting & collaborations).
  • Support logistics/admin tasks for Data Analytics Center, Digital Technology Core, VA-WHPC program, and RC outreach events, e.g., help organize and publicize community events and manage program social media posts.
  • Help compile activity report data using Python or other programming skills.

Compensation and Hours

Compensation: $18.00/hr. Paid bi‑weekly. Anticipated work hours: 20 hrs/week between 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m., Monday‑Friday through Summer and Fall 2026. Anticipated start date: July 1, 2026.

Physical Demands

This is primarily a sedentary job involving extensive use of desktop computers. The job occasionally requires traveling some distance to attend meetings and programs.
