  • Must be a currently enrolled UM-Flint undergraduate student.
  • Successful completion and understanding of organic chemistry I & II (330 & 332).
  • Successful completion and understanding of biochemistry (at least CHM 350 or CHM 450).

Responsibilities

  • Assist with setting up biochemical experiments, finishing those experiments, graphing and analysis of data, and data interpretation.
  • Handle mammalian cancer cells, reagents, solvents, and chemicals.
  • Occasional group meetings to discuss project progress.
  • Be prepared and excited to work in lab on the days research will be completed.
  • Maintain a neat, up to date lab notebook.
  • Complete all required safety training and renew training on the required schedule.
  • Work under biosafety level 2 procedures and responsibilities.
  • Know locations and appropriate usage of all safety equipment.
  • Follow all departmental safety rules.
  • Ensure good housekeeping in the lab by cleaning up after themselves, putting away reagents and chemicals, washing dishes, returning materials, wiping benchtops, and cleaning biosafety cabinets.

Job Summary

Undergraduate researchers will work weekly schedules with times based upon the needs for the lab. Undergraduate researchers are responsible for tending mammalian cell cultures, setting up experiments, finishing experiments, processing and analyzing data, following biosafety level 2 laboratory procedures, and maintaining a clean, safe lab. They may also be required to perform other routine laboratory tasks such as making or testing reagents, setting up and testing instrumentation or equipment. The undergraduate researchers are expected to be friendly and approachable to all members working in the lab space, and to work safely. Undergraduate researchers in this position will work under the supervision of Dr. Jessica Kelts.

Responsibilities

In addition, all undergraduate researchers are expected to:? Assist with setting up biochemical experiments, finishing those experiments, graphing and analysis of data, and data interpretation. These tasks include but are not limited to:

  • Handling/working with mammalian cancer cells
  • Handling/ working with reagents, solvents, and chemicals
  • Occasional group meetings to discuss project progress?
  • Be prepared and excited to work in lab on the days research will be completed ?
  • Maintain a neat, up to date lab notebook ?
  • Complete all required safety training and renew training on the required schedule?
  • Work under biosafety level 2 procedures and responsibilities?

    • Cleaning up after themselves
    • Making sure all reagents and chemicals are put away
    • Washing dishes as they are used
    • Return materials to their assigned location

    • Cleaning the biosafety cabinets and other work areas after use
Required Qualifications
  • Must be a currently enrolled UM-Flint undergraduate student ?
  • Successful completion and understanding of organic chemistry I & II (330 & 332) ?
  • Successful completion and understanding of biochemistry (at least CHM 350 or CHM 450)
Desired Qualifications
  • Ability to work well with others?
  • Ability to use Microsoft Excel and GraphPad Prism or learn to do so

OnsiteThe work requires, or the supervisor approves a fully onsite presence.
