Title: Developing Imaging Methods to Evaluate Human Skin and Myofascial Tissue
Description
The Gerling Touch Lab at the University of Virginia invites applications for a highly motivated postdoctoral researcher to lead cutting-edge research in developing imaging and force sensing methods for use in evaluating human skin and myofascial tissue. This position focuses on imaging using digital image correlation, human subjects experiments, and data and statistical analysis to monitor and assess human skin and myofascial tissue in response to soft tissue manipulation. The successful applicant will collaborate with an interdisciplinary team to develop methods, software, and computational models and analyses.
This is a full-time, in-residence position based in Charlottesville, VA. The initial appointment will end on 12/31/2025. The appointment may be renewed for an additional one year, contingent upon satisfactory performance and funding. The postdoctoral researcher will be housed in the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences, advised by Dr. Gregory Gerling.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead research initiatives focused on evaluating tissue properties in response to soft tissue manipulation
- Design and implement innovative modeling and analysis approaches that integrate imaging and sensor data and patient self-report
- Design, conduct, and evaluate human subjects experiments
- Mentor and supervise undergraduate and graduate students involved in research
- Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams across engineering, physical therapy, and neuroscience
- Lead the preparation and submission of manuscripts to top-tier journals and conferences
- Present research findings at seminars, academic conferences, and scientific meetings
- Contribute to the development of grant proposals and other research funding efforts
Qualification Requirement
- Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related field
- Experience with digital image correlation methods
- Strong programming skills in relevant languages (Python, Matlab, etc.)
- Experience in working with human subjects participants
- Knowledge of data analysis techniques and pipeline
- Publication record in relevant technical fields
- Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Demonstrated ability to work independently and in teams
- Experience with research project management
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with digital image correlation
- Familiarity with IRB regulations and the conduct of human subjects experiments
- Background in data analysis
- Experience using cloud computing and data storage platforms
- Track record of publications in high-impact scientific journals or conferences
- Experience contributing to or leading research grant applications
- Experience mentoring student researchers or junior team members
