Job summary

University of the Incarnate Word seeks a Research Associate to support faculty-led research in the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences. You will operate and maintain instrumentation, coordinate activities, and contribute to teaching and training of students under faculty direction.

You will troubleshoot experiments, ensure data integrity, and assist with compliance and study protocols while collaborating with diverse researchers. This is a full-time, on-site position with institutional funding.

Qualifications

  • Proficiency in MS Outlook, Word, Excel and data-management systems.
  • Strong verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills for effective interaction with PIs, faculty, students, and technical personnel.
  • Excellent knowledge of laboratory sciences including animal research, cell culture, chemistry-based methods, and safety regulations.
  • Strong organizational, documentation, and time-management skills to support multiple concurrent projects.
  • Ability to understand procedures and experiments within formal training and willingness to learn new techniques and instrumentation.
  • Ability to train, mentor, and provide functional supervision of students and research personnel on equipment use and best practices.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively while supporting diverse research needs and engaging with individuals from varied backgrounds.

Responsibilities

  • Perform experiments across diverse research settings under faculty guidance.
  • Communicate with PIs regarding project timelines, expectations, and progress.
  • Manage multiple concurrent research projects.
  • Mentor, monitor and supervise students and research personnel for productivity and safety.
  • Coordinate day-to-day activities of research personnel executing study protocols.
  • Train users on laboratory instruments and maintain training logs.
  • Plan, initiate, and implement study protocols, operating procedures, and data collection processes.
  • Independently troubleshoot experiments and ensure data integrity.
  • Oversee data management to ensure high-quality results.
  • Operate, maintain, and troubleshoot laboratory equipment (LC-MS, microtome, spectrophotometers, microscopes, incubators).
  • Maintain supply inventories and obtain procurement quotes as needed.
  • Participate in instruction of team-taught laboratory courses.
  • Document research-related correspondence and equipment communication.
  • Collaborate with faculty and student researchers.
  • Assist with posters, manuscripts, grant writing, and related scholarly activities.

Position Summary

The Research Associate is responsible for assisting in faculty-led research, operating and maintaining scientific instrumentation, coordinating research activities, contributing to the teaching and training of students and research personnel, and ensuring compliance with research regulations and procedures for the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences. The role exercises independent judgment in troubleshooting experiments, supporting data integrity, and assisting with compliance‑related procedures under faculty direction. The Research Associate reports to the Assistant Dean/Chair of Pharmaceutical Sciences.
Note that this position is institutional funded, not dependent on grant-funding.

Required Education

Bachelors Degree in Chemistry, Biology, Pharmaceutical Science or a related field.

Required Work Experience

At least two (2) years of experience in a scientific research laboratory.

Work Hours

Monday through Friday 8am to 5pm with flexibility and/or extended hours as needed to meet departmental goals. Some flexibility in schedule necessary due to nature of experiments.
