Research Associate

Job Description Summary

  • Identifies and validates molecular targets that play a key role in a particular disease process. Studies origin, relationship, development, anatomy, functions, and chemical processes of living organisms. Analyzes materials to determine their toxic or nontoxic properties, binding and efficacy. Isolates or purifies analyses, and identifies hormones, minerals, proteins, and/or cultures of microorganisms to determine their biological properties. Examines and conducts research on chemical aspects of cells and cell division. Requires an understanding of molecular biology, biochemistry, microbiology, cell biology, biophysics, virology, and/or immunology.
  • May identify and produce small quantities of new drugs, pharmaceutical compounds, and/or nutrients. May develop an assay which employs in-vitro and/or in-vivo biological and immunological systems. May experiment with animals and tissue to determine the effect of new drug compound entities utilizing in-vivo, in-vitro, and ex-vivo models on cells, tissues, and whole animal systems.

Research Scientist Levels:

  • Research Scientist II: Performs experiments and procedures demonstrating proficiency with a broad range of scientific or technology techniques; executes high-quality experiments and delivers and interprets data with colleagues and/or project teams.
  • Research Scientist I: Executes experiments and procedures requiring specific scientific or technical knowledge and laboratory techniques; delivers high-quality data to impact drug discovery, technology, and/or early development projects.

Major accountabilities:

  • Research Scientist II: Generates hypotheses to test, troubleshoots issues, and designs and executes the next set of experiments with some input from senior lab members/manager.
  • Approaches work with urgency, manages basic research activities in parallel.
  • Provides basic data analysis to interpret own experiments ‐ assesses whether experimental hypothesis was appropriately tested and answered.
  • Works collaboratively across teams and trains other members of team in areas of technical expertise as needed.
  • Participates constructively in working teams and at lab meetings.
  • Steps in to support general lab responsibilities.
  • Generates hypotheses, independently executes experiments, and uses results to assist in the design of the next experiment.
  • Recognizes problems and provides input on solutions; suggests new approaches to established procedures to progress key drug discovery, technology, and/or early development projects.
  • Works collaboratively across lab with all members.
  • Expected to be an excellent lab citizen.
  • Uses understanding of experimental hypothesis and works with manager and colleagues to troubleshoot issues and help design and execute next experiment.
  • Experimental results support progression of drug discovery, technology, and/or early development projects.

Requirements:

  • PhD is required with zero years of industry experience.
  • The successful candidate will be proficient in expressing and purifying recombinant proteins from bacteria, insect, and mammalian cells.
  • Ability to characterize small molecule and protein-protein interactions using biophysical techniques including SPR, DSF, SEC-MALLS, analytical ultracentrifugation, and ITC.
  • Previous experience solving protein structures using x-ray crystallography and cryoEM microscopy.

Location: Onsite Cambridge, MA

Pay Rate: $46 - $58/hour based on experience and qualifications (W2 Only)

Contract: 2-month
