The Giri lab at Michigan Medicine conducts epidemiologic and genetic studies to understand musculoskeletal, cardiometabolic, and maternal health conditions, leveraging GWAS, Mendelian randomization and gene–lifestyle analyses. Large-scale biobanks linked to EHR data support causal inference in diverse populations.
The Research Area Specialist will apply advanced epidemiologic methods and genetic analyses, work in high-performance computing environments, and mentor trainees while contributing to
Michigan Medicine improves the health of patients, populations and communities through excellence in education, patient care, community service, research and technology development, and through leadership activities in Michigan, nationally and internationally. Our mission is guided by our Strategic Principles and has three critical components; patient care, education and research that together enhance our contribution to society.
The Giri lab investigates how genetic and lifestyle factors contribute to the etiology of musculoskeletal diseases, and cardiovascular and metabolic conditions in general the population and pregnant individuals. We employ a diverse array of epidemiological and genetic research approaches, including GWAS, admixture mapping, Mendelian randomization, and gene-lifestyle interaction studies, to identify novel genetic variants and understand the causal mechanisms behind complex diseases. Our research includes collaborative studies on:
Research on these diverse topics is facilitated by leveraging large national and international biobanks linked to electronic health record (EHR) data. A key methodological focus of the Giri lab is to develop gold standard practices of harvesting EHR data that are rooted in sound epidemiological study design principles to identify common sources of bias (often overlooked in EHR-mining) and to prioritize methods that facilitate causal inference.
Research Area Specialist is expected to conduct advanced research in the field of genetic epidemiology. The position requires expertise in epidemiologic methods, genetic analyses, advanced statistical techniques, and public health research.
