Boies Schiller Flexner LLP is seeking a highly analytical and motivated Research Analyst to support the Firm's growing contingency practice. This role is designed for an early-career finance or investment professional who is interested in applying rigorous financial, commercial, and market analysis to complex litigation opportunities.
The Research Analyst will work closely with attorneys, Legal Operations, Finance, and Firm leadership to identify and evaluate prospective contingency matters, assess case economics and risk, monitor active investments, and translate analysis into clear, actionable recommendations. The successful candidate will connect market and transaction intelligence with fundamental case analysis, understand how complex matters progress toward resolution, and help assess their underlying value and potential return. This is a high-impact opportunity to gain broad exposure to investment analysis, portfolio management, litigation strategy, and executive-level decision-making while helping shape the Firm's contingency platform as it grows.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Identify and assess prospective contingency opportunities by researching claims, parties, industries, markets, comparable disputes, potential recoveries, and key commercial considerations.
- Support the underwriting and evaluation of new matters, including analysis of legal and commercial risks, expected duration, capital requirements, potential outcomes, and risk-adjusted returns.
- Build and maintain detailed financial models for prospective and active matters, including projected fees and costs, recovery scenarios, timing assumptions, sensitivities, and expected returns.
- Synthesize legal, financial, industry, and market information into concise investment memoranda, recommendations, and presentation materials for Firm leadership and relevant internal committees.
- Conduct company, industry, market, and competitive research to identify relevant trends, valuation considerations, counterparties, and potential case-specific risks or opportunities.
- Perform financial statement, valuation, and scenario analysis to assess the strength, collectability, and commercial significance of potential claims and recoveries.
- Monitor active contingency matters, including budgets, spending trends, milestones, case developments, forecast changes, and portfolio concentration.
- Create and maintain portfolio-level reporting, dashboards, and management materials that support capital allocation, forecasting, and strategic decision-making.
- Evaluate litigation funding proposals and other financing structures, including pricing, economics, terms, and potential impacts on matter-level and portfolio returns.
- Partner with attorneys and professional staff to gather, validate, and organize matter-related data and ensure that analyses reflect current facts and assumptions.
- Identify patterns and insights across the contingency docket and recommend improvements to underwriting, reporting, forecasting, and matter-management processes.
- Support cross-functional workstreams, special projects, and ad hoc analyses for Firm leadership, taking ownership of assignments from initial research through final recommendation.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Strong analytical, quantitative, valuation, and problem-solving skills, with the ability to evaluate opportunities where outcomes and timing are uncertain.
- Ability to connect market and transaction intelligence with fundamental analysis and translate complex information into clear, actionable recommendations.
- Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel and demonstrated experience building financial models, forecasts, sensitivities, and management reports.
- Strong financial statement analysis skills and knowledge of corporate finance, valuation, capital markets, or investment principles.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to prepare concise presentations and investment materials for senior audiences.
- Sound commercial judgment, intellectual curiosity, and comfort operating with limited precedent in complex situations.
- Strong attention to detail, organizational skills, and ability to manage multiple workstreams under tight deadlines.
- Proactive, collaborative, and confident working with attorneys, executives, and professional staff across the Firm.
- Ability to take ownership, exercise independent judgment, and maintain confidentiality when handling sensitive information.
- Interest in the intersection of finance, business strategy, and complex litigation.
EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE
- Bachelor's degree in Finance, Accounting, Economics, Business Administration, Statistics, Mathematics, or a related field.
- Approximately 2-3 years of experience in investment banking, litigation funding, private equity, corporate development, transaction advisory, consulting, financial due diligence, investment research, corporate finance, accounting, business analytics, legal operations, or a related analytical role.
- Experience with transaction execution, investment underwriting, valuation, financial due diligence, or capital deployment analysis is preferred.
- Prior exposure to legal services, litigation finance, financial services, asset management, or complex commercial disputes is beneficial but not required.
