The Office of the District Attorney, Bronx County seeks a Reporter/Stenographer to support Grand Jury proceedings by taking verbatim testimony and producing accurate transcripts using a stenotype machine and Case Catalyst. The role requires confidentiality, fast turnaround, and court appearances when needed.

You will maintain case records, transcribe audio for ADAs, and work under deadlines in a dynamic court environment. Strong Word, Excel, Outlook, and Acrobat skills are essential.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent approved by a State’s Dept. of Education or accrediting organization.
  • Graduate Certificate at 225 WPM from a Court Reporting Institution.
  • Proficiency to take two-voice dictation at 175 words per minute.

Responsibilities

  • Reports to the Grand Jury to take verbatim testimony on stenographic machine.
  • Transcribes two-voice testimony with confidential proceedings and transcribes minutes quickly.
  • Uses Case Catalyst with a personal dictionary to produce transcripts promptly.
  • Keeps accurate records and files of cases.
  • Appears in court to testify as to transcript accuracy when required.
  • Transcribes audio files for ADAs for hearings and trials.
  • Performs all other duties as assigned.

Job description

The Office of the District Attorney, Bronx County (“BXDA”) is charged with the twin goals of ensuring public safety and striving for equal justice for the over 1.4 million members of the Bronx County community. By “Pursuing Justice with Integrity,” the BXDA places a focus on assistance for crime victims while simultaneously ensuring fairness to defendants. Moreover, the BXDA aims to balance the need to seek appropriate punishment for certain crimes while recognizing when punitive measures do not adequately advance justice. In furtherance of this mission, the BXDA seeks experienced and enthusiastic Reporter / Stenographer.

Job Responsibilities
  • Reports to the Grand Jury to take verbatim testimony on Stenographic machine, provided by Office.
  • Ability to take down two (2) voice testimony in confidential proceedings and transcribe all minutes in a quick turnaround time period.
  • Uses Case Catalyst System with personal dictionary to produce transcripts in an expeditious time frame.
  • Keeps accurate records and files of cases.
  • Appears in court to testify, when required, as to accuracy of transcripts.
  • Transcribes audio files for ADAs for hearings and/or trials.
  • All other duties as assigned.

REPORTER/STENOGRAPHER - 10212

Preferred Qualifications
  • A High School diploma or equivalent and a Graduate Certificate at 225 WPM from a Court Reporting Institution.
  • Ability to take two-voice testimony at an average of 175 words per minute.
Minimum Qualifications

Education Requirement: By the last day of the Application Period you must have a four-year high school diploma or its educational equivalent approved by a State’s Department of Education or a recognized accrediting organization.

REQUIREMENTS TO BE APPOINTED:

Stenotype Proficiency: At the time of the appointment interview, you will be required to demonstrate your proficiency to take two-voice dictation, using a stenotype machine, at the rate of 175 words per minute and to transcribe same.

Special Note

To be eligible for assignment to Assignment Level II, an incumbent must have at least one year of satisfactory experience working in an office of a District Attorney performing Assignment Level I duties.

Preferred Skills
  • Ability to transcribe testimony in a timely manner using Case Catalyst.
  • Ability to read back testimony from notes for Grand Jury or ADA.
  • Must be able to maintain a high degree of confidentiality.
  • Strong proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and Adobe Acrobat.
  • Excellent time management skills Strong desire and ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment.
  • Familiarity with general court services.
  • Ability to work independently and effectively under deadlines.
