Customer Experience Assistant – 32 hours – Parkland/Spanaway

Parkland Region

Pierce County Library System

Hiring Range: $24.49 – $28.40 per hour | Pay Grade Range: $24.49 – $33.90 per hour

Compensation: The starting pay is within the hiring range based on experience. The package includes annual increases tied to experience and tenure up to the maximum pay grade. Overtime is available only for non‑exempt, FLSA positions.

FLSA Status: Non‑exempt | Position Status: Regular

Location: Parkland region – Parkland/Spanaway, Orting, Summit

Hours per Week: 32

Schedule: Rotating shifts that may include weekdays, weekends, evenings, and occasional Saturday hours. Specific times and days vary.

Position Summary

Provide high‑quality customer service to diverse patrons at assigned library locations. Assist patrons with library accounts, public technology, and readers’ advisory services, supporting the library’s mission to deliver direct customer service.

Essential Functions
  • Deliver customer‑focused services to individuals of all ages.
  • Assist patrons in person, by phone, and digitally.
  • Apply library policies, address concerns, and resolve complaints.
  • Perform routine circulation and account tasks (check‑in/out, shelving, holds, card registration, cash handling).
  • Provide basic reference and readers’ advisory assistance.
  • Offer hardware and software support, instructing patrons on databases and electronic collections.
  • Assist patrons in locating materials online and on‑site, promoting library services.
  • Process, sort, and shelve materials; maintain periodicals.
  • Prepare and maintain displays; update bulletin boards and promotional flyers.
  • Count and balance deposits; prepare weekly financial reports.
  • Act as Person in Charge when delegated or scheduled.
  • Support program activities as directed by a supervisor or librarian.
  • Participate on project teams and committees as appropriate.
  • Provide customer feedback to supervisors to improve services.
  • Report public concerns regarding waste, corruption, discrimination, or safety to library management.
  • Show punctuality and reliable attendance.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

  • May direct work of additional staff or volunteers, as directed.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Associate’s Degree in a related field or equivalent education/experience.
  • Two years of public library or customer service experience.
  • Ability to apply library policies and resolve customer concerns.
  • Proficiency in circulation, account management, and financial reporting.
  • Basic reference and readers’ advisory skills.
  • Knowledge of public technology support.
  • Experience in creating and maintaining displays and promotional materials.
  • Ability to lead or direct staff and volunteers.
  • Ability to manage program support and project teams.
  • Proficiency with basic office equipment and PC navigation.
  • Intermediate MS Office Suite skills.
  • Valid Washington State Driver’s License may be required for some assignments.
  • Must pass a criminal background screening.
  • Ability to work evenings, weekends, and on multiple locations with rotating schedules.
  • Physical capability to lift and move up to 35–50 pounds and operate carts.
Technology Requirements

Required:

  • Navigate electronic record systems (timecard/HRIS, performance reviews).
  • Use basic office equipment (PC, printer, copier, phone, fax).
  • Effective data entry and keyboard skills.
  • Basic PC navigation in a Windows environment, including printing.
  • Navigate, search, and use web functions.
  • Intermediate MS Office Suite (Outlook, Word, Excel).
  • Knowledge of HRIS and specialized library software suites.

Desired:

  • Experience with Integrated Library System, inventory or data management systems.
  • Completion of Basic MOS Certification or corresponding course.
  • Knowledge of digital media, digital collections, and e‑books.
Physical and Environmental Conditions

Work is conducted in a normal office or library environment with comfortable lighting and temperature. Outdoor service may involve varying weather and safety protocols. Tasks include light lifting up to 35 pounds, standing and walking for extended periods, bending, reaching, and push/pull of carts (up to 50 pounds). Standard safety precautions apply.
