Qualifications

Position Summary

We are looking for a Level IV Generator Technician. The role involves installing, troubleshooting, repairing, and maintaining diesel and natural gas generators and engines ranging from 20 kW up to 500 kW. Responsibilities include identifying, diagnosing, and providing quality repairs of electrical generator systems and related engine mechanical failures.

What You’ll Do (Day-to-Day)

Level IV technicians install, troubleshoot, repair, and maintain diesel and natural gas generators and engines ranging from 20 kW to 500 kW. The role is responsible for identifying, troubleshooting, diagnosing, and providing quality repairs of electrical generator systems and related engine mechanical failures.

Essential Duties
  • Perform basic preventive maintenance and assist others in performing intermediate and advanced corrective maintenance tasks.
  • Use basic knowledge of engine/generator mechanical and electrical operation to perform tasks or assist others.
  • Replace batteries, belts, hoses; change and/or top off oil and filters.
  • Properly fill out all service reports, PM checklists and timecards within department guidelines; ensure they are legible, accurate, and detailed for service accounting needs.
  • Work a flexible schedule and respond to emergency calls as needed.
  • Obtain pre-assigned work orders, schedule date, customer name, service level; locate/load parts and check for special instructions; travel to job site and perform scope of work.
  • Provide detailed computerized template reports and timecards upon completion for daily accountability.
  • Accurately evaluate, test, diagnose and troubleshoot basic and intermediate problems on gas or diesel engines and generators; recommend and perform associated repairs.
  • Communicate, plan, complete, and document all troubleshooting and repair procedures within standard repair times.
  • Perform load bank testing with understanding of reactive and resistive testing per NFPA regulations or customer request.
  • Troubleshoot block heater and battery charger issues and replace if needed.
  • Perform advanced troubleshooting and corrective maintenance; assist or lead others in intermediate and advanced tasks on engines, generators, and related equipment.
  • Perform control panel conversions, re‑tapping generator ends, and isolating or replacing faulty breakers.
  • Prepare reports to maintain accurate records of equipment and preventive maintenance.
  • Communicate with customers regarding status of equipment and maintain strong relationships.
  • Work with Supervisor on technical issues and scheduling.
  • Make recommendations, coordinate with Supervisor, and implement changes to improve Service team efficiency.
Safety
  • Maintain thorough knowledge of and actively practice and promote safe working activities in accordance with OSHA, EPA, and other required regulations for safe operation of all equipment.
  • Report all recognized unsafe conditions or acts to Management.
  • Wear proper PPE when necessary.
Additional Responsibilities
  • Provide and use own tools necessary to complete job requirements. Necessary tools listed in “Essential Tools” section.
  • Attend training sessions as required.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned.
Supervisory Responsibilities
  • Lead a team to train lower-level technicians in preventative, predictive, and corrective maintenance as well as safe task execution.

Education
