Job summary

The UCLA Voting Rights Project (VRP) seeks an experienced litigation, trial and appellate attorney to work on California redistricting plans and election policies. VRP operates within UCLA Luskin, in partnership with UCLA Law and the UCLA School of Social Sciences, to advance voting rights through litigation, research and clinical education.

Qualifications

  • At least 4 years of heavy litigation experience in state courts of California (Required)
  • First or second chair trial experience of at least 5 contested civil or criminal matters (Required)
  • Experience drafting, editing, finalizing, and e-filing state court pleadings of varying nature in California courts (Required)
  • Experience working with clients, co-counsel, support staff and opposing counsel on vigorous litigation (Required)
  • Ideally the successful candidate will have experience seeking temporary restraining orders, preliminary injunctions and permanent injunctive relief (Preferred)
  • Some experience and/or demonstrated interest in civil rights or voting rights causes (Preferred)
  • Exceptional legal research, writing, analytical, and oral communication skills (Required)

Responsibilities

  • Work with VRP data scientists to support litigation and analysis of redistricting plans.
  • Litigate civil rights cases in California state courts and manage a docket.
  • Track vulnerable jurisdictions and coordinate with partner organizations.
  • Draft pleadings, briefs, and discovery responses; support trials and appeals.
  • Develop statewide trainings for attorneys, advocates, students, and partners.
  • Prepare amicus briefs and assist with testimony before government bodies.
  • Create legal resources, model briefs, and practical briefs for litigants.
