Job summary

Pilot is hiring a Staff Software Engineer for the Takeoff team to own core accounting systems behind our bookkeeping platform. You will shape technical direction for cross-team systems and drive outcomes that impact customers' books.

The Takeoff backend is fully typed Python; frontend uses JavaScript/TypeScript/Vue.js. We deploy on AWS with Terraform, Postgres, and modern observability. This remote role requires strong async communication and mentoring across teams.

Qualifications

• 7+ years of experience as a software engineer.
• Production experience with Python.
• Track record of leading complex, multi-team technical projects to outcomes.
• Ability to set technical direction and gain buy-in across teams and functions.
• Strong coding fundamentals and well-tested code.
• Good product and systems judgment in ambiguous spaces.
• Strong communication skills and cross-functional work.
• Experience working effectively on a remote team with async communication.
• Demonstrated mentoring and sponsorship of engineers.
• Remote employment available in US states: CA, GA, NY, NC, TN, TX, WA.

Responsibilities

• Lead projects with high ambiguity from problem definition through delivery.
• Set technical strategy and architectural decisions for cross-team systems.
• Identify cross-team gaps and drive strategy to address them.
• Build, test, and deploy software in a continuous manner (daily or more).
• Create and review technical specs and uphold quality standards.
• Collaborate with PMs, Designers, and stakeholders to solve the right problems.
• Mentor and sponsor engineers across the organization.
• Investigate production issues and improve system reliability.
