Job summary

BILL's AI Product Engineering team is seeking a Staff ML Engineer to shape the future of intelligent financial automation. You will own end-to-end ML initiatives, from research through production, spanning LLM-based extraction and model deployment.

This senior IC role combines hands-on model work with strategic direction, mentoring engineers and collaborating with product and platform leadership to raise the technical bar across our AI/ML organization.

Qualifications

• 8+ years in software/ML engineering with a Staff level or equivalent scope.
• Experience fine-tuning LLMs (LoRA/QLoRA, DPO/RLHF) and production-scale models.
• Production experience in at least one: recommendation systems, personalization, or search/ranking.
• Strong data reasoning, evaluation design, and A/B testing experience.

Responsibilities

• Own technical direction for high-impact ML initiatives end to end, from problem framing and research exploration through production deployment and measurement, across document understanding, field extraction, and model-serving infrastructure
• Stay hands-on: prototype, fine-tune, and ship models yourself; write production code alongside the engineers you mentor
• Lead our LLM strategy, including fine-tuning open-weight foundation models, designing evaluation harnesses, and making build-vs-buy decisions across accuracy, cost, latency, and privacy constraints
• Bring a research-oriented mindset to production problems: read and translate current literature into practice, design experiments and ablations, and know when a technique applies to our data distribution
• Design the data flywheel, including labeling pipelines and drift monitoring, so models improve from production signals
• Set engineering standards for model evaluation, reproducibility, and responsible deployment; participate in design reviews on ML-shaped work
• Mentor and multiply: grow senior and mid-level ML engineers through code review and guidance; influence roadmaps with product/plat leadership
