Job summary

Reddit, Inc. is seeking a Staff Machine Learning Engineer to lead the Retrieval and Targeting ML team, driving the design and evolution of retrieval models that improve relevance and user experience at Reddit scale.

You will stay close to technical details—from data and objectives to model development, evaluation, experimentation, and launch—while guiding other engineers and shaping long-term strategy.

Qualifications

• 7+ years of industry experience building and shipping applied ML products.
• Deep experience with information retrieval, candidate generation, recommender systems, ranking, or related relevance problems.
• Strong understanding of retrieval modeling concepts: DNN, embeddings, two-tower/dual-encoder models, ANN search.
• Experience with TensorFlow, PyTorch, or similar frameworks for training and deploying models.
• Demonstrated ownership of ML projects from problem framing to production launch and iteration.
• Strong experimental design and evaluation skills linking offline metrics to business/user outcomes.

Responsibilities

• Define the technical direction and multi-year roadmap for ads retrieval modeling with cross-functional teams.
• Design, develop, and launch candidate-generation and retrieval models for campaigns and ads across Reddit surfaces.
• Apply modern retrieval techniques (two-tower, embeddings, sequence models) to create product value.
• Improve retrieval stack decisions: objectives, labels, sampling, hard negatives, features, embeddings, filtering, depth.
• Collaborate with ANN/vector systems, balancing recall, relevance, freshness, diversity, latency, and cost.
• Establish evaluation practices linking retrieval metrics to ads and user outcomes; lead offline/online experiments.
