Job summary

Reddit is seeking a Staff Machine Learning Engineer for Retrieval & Targeting to lead ads retrieval modeling at scale. You will guide model design, training, evaluation, and deployment, collaborating with data science, engineering, and product teams to improve relevance and user experience across US-based campaigns.

You will own the end-to-end process from problem framing to production, mentor engineers, and influence cross-functional partners while staying close to the technical details.

Qualifications

• 7+ years of industry experience in applied ML.
• Deep experience with information retrieval, candidate generation, or recommender systems.
• Strong understanding of retrieval modeling concepts: embeddings, two-tower, or dual-encoder models.
• Experience training and deploying deep learning models using TensorFlow or PyTorch.
• Ownership of ML projects from problem framing to production.
• Strong experimental design linking offline metrics to business and user outcomes.
• Experience with large-scale datasets and complex feature pipelines.
• Strong software engineering and ability to write reliable production code.
• Technical leadership: setting direction and mentoring engineers.
• Excellent written and verbal communication.

Responsibilities

• Define the technical direction and multi-year roadmap for ads retrieval modeling in partnership with engineering, product, data science, and ads stakeholders.
• Design, develop, and launch candidate-generation and retrieval models for campaigns and ads.
• Apply two-tower architectures, embeddings, sequence models, and other deep learning methods when they add value.
• Improve retrieval stack decisions: objectives, labels, sampling, hard-negative mining, embedding generation.
• Work with ANN and vector retrieval systems while weighing recall, relevance, latency, and cost.
• Establish evaluation practices linking retrieval metrics to ads and user outcomes.
• Lead offline analysis and online experiments; translate findings into iterations.
• Partner with ranking, ads platform, auction, measurement, and product teams.
• Write design docs, review code, and raise the quality bar for production modeling.
• Mentor ML engineers and grow retrieval/recommendation expertise.
