Job summary

Affirm is hiring a senior backend engineer to lead the design, development and deployment of scalable systems across the stack. You will work closely with product, design and analytics to ensure reliability, performance and business impact, while mentoring engineers and owning on‑call readiness.

You will thrive in ambiguity, drive technical decisions, and help evolve architecture from low‑level details to large-scale systems.

Qualifications

• 8+ years designing and launching backend systems at scale.
• Experience with Python or Kotlin and building highly available distributed services.
• Proficient with AWS, MySQL, Spark and Kubernetes.
• Experience delivering major features and working with cross-functional teams.
• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent practical experience.

Responsibilities

• Set technical strategy for the team on a year-long horizon and align it with business goals.
• Collaborate with product, design and analytics to ensure sustainable, well-understood solutions.
• Drive technical solutions, define operating processes, and improve system reliability.
• Own team operations, monitoring, on-call readiness, and incident response.
• Define coding standards and mentor engineers through reviews and Tech talks.
• Help grow team by giving feedback and modeling best practices.
