Qualifications

• 7+ years of backend development experience, with 3+ years in data platforms/backend infrastructure for data-centric apps
• Strong SQL proficiency with PostgreSQL and query optimization
• Hands-on data streaming/event processing experience (Kafka or equivalents)
• Proficiency in Julia or Python; willingness to learn Julia
• Experience deploying/operating services in containerized environments (Kubernetes) and IaC tools
• Track record of mentoring engineers and improving team practices
• Excellent written and verbal communication for async/remote work
• Interest in using AI-assisted coding tools with good guardrails

Responsibilities

• Lead design across the Datastore breadth, including APIs, pipelines, and data models
• Collaborate with product, scientific, and engineering teams to translate requirements into scalable solutions
• Debug and profile cross-system problems, improving structure, tests, and tooling
• Draft RFCs and guide complex feature discovery and technical design
• Plan work and balance speed, generalizability, and technical debt for multiple stakeholders
• Mentor engineers and elevate team practices, tooling, and documentation
• Contribute to operational robustness and ease of use via documentation and dashboards
