Beacon Biosignals is seeking a Staff Software Engineer to advance the Datastore platform, focusing on scalable backend systems, SQL-rich data models, and robust pipelines for clinical study data. You will collaborate with scientific and product stakeholders to unlock new research workflows and ensure data integrity.

Qualifications

• 7+ years of backend development experience, including data platforms and backend infrastructure for data-centric applications such as transactional systems, event pipelines, and APIs.
• Highly proficient in data modeling, distributed systems, API design, or database engineering, with depth others on the team seek.
• Strong proficiency in SQL with PostgreSQL experience; able to reason about schema design, indexes, and query plans.
• Hands-on experience with data streaming and event processing using Kafka or equivalents.
• Proficiency in Julia or Python; Julia is a core Datastore language, but learning it is welcomed.
• Experience deploying and operating services in containerized environments; Kubernetes and IaC tools like Terraform or Helm.
• Track record of mentoring engineers and improving team practices, tooling, tests, or documentation.
• Collaborative mindset with strong asynchronous communication skills.

Responsibilities

• Lead design and architecture for complex Datastore projects, balancing trade-offs with engineering principles.
• Translate stakeholder requirements into integrations, services, and scalable data workflows.
• Debug and profile cross-system issues; improve structure, tests, and tooling for the Datastore.
• Mentor engineers and possibly act as tech lead within the team to raise standards and consistency.
• Draft RFCs and drive complex feature discovery and technical design phases.
• Plan work and contribute to team planning with sensible trade-offs across speed and generalizability.
• Collaborate across platform, application, and scientific teams to enable new data workflows.
