Job summary

GTSC seeks a Scientific Programmer in Remote Sensing Applications in College Park, MD, to develop SST datasets from multiple sensors and to advance cloud masking, SST retrieval, and error characterization. The role combines scientific computing with software development, within a team of SST scientists and developers.

The position is long-term, with a hybrid onsite/telework model and potential for remote work. PhD in a quantitative field preferred; MS considered with relevant experience.

Qualifications

• PhD (or MS with relevant experience) in a quantitative field.
• Strong background in remote sensing, satellite/oceanographic data and analyses.
• Proficient in C++, Fortran, Python; familiar with OpenMP, MPI, CUDA.
• Experience with ML frameworks PyTorch or TensorFlow.
• Experience with netCDF4, HDF5, HDF4, Zarr formats.
• Proficient in Linux; SSH; knowledge of Apache Airflow a plus.
• Track record of deliverables (publications, software, products).
• Ability to conduct independent research while collaborating in a team.

Responsibilities

• Develop and maintain science code for SST datasets from multiple sensors (VIIRS, AHI, ABI, AVHRR, MODIS, METimage, FCI).
• Improve cloud masking, SST retrieval, and error characterization algorithms.
• Operate as part of a team of SST scientists and software developers within NOAA/STAR.
