Job summary
payabl. is seeking a Senior Backend Engineer to help strengthen our Gateway Related Projects team. You will maintain a Perl-based gateway while building scalable Python microservices to support high-load payment processing.
The role emphasizes reliability, performance, and a product-minded approach in a remote setup across Europe and the US. You will lead architectural efforts, integrate multiple payment APIs, and collaborate with DevOps on CI/CD (GitLab) and AWS services to ensure zero-downtime
Qualifications
- 5+ years backend engineering with Python expertise (FastAPI/AsyncIO preferred).
- Experience with Perl production code is mandatory or willingness to learn.
Responsibilities
- Support and extend Perl-based gateway while building high-performance Python microservices.
- Architect scalable Python services to replace legacy components under heavy load.
- Integrate third-party APIs and manage webhooks with robust error handling.
- Lead code reviews and drive engineering best practices for performance and scalability.
- Collaborate with DevOps to improve CI/CD pipelines using GitLab and AWS services.
