Democracy Defenders Action seeks an in-house Counsel to support accountability, transparency, and ethics initiatives within the Policy, Oversight, and Ethics department. You will advise on corruption, oversight, and litigation matters while coordinating with senior staff.

Based in the DC/DMV area or remote for the right candidate, you will draft regulatory comments, FOIA requests, and policy briefs, supporting hearings and testimonies, and helping advance democracy and rule of law.

Qualificações

• JD from an accredited law school.
• Active US state bar in good standing; DC admission possible.
• 2–8 years of legal work in administrative, constitutional, privacy & data security, election, federal civil service, or public records laws.
• Familiar with congressional or executive oversight, investigations, or regulatory complaint procedures.
• Strong verbal and interpersonal communication skills.
• Excellent legal writing, analytical, and research abilities.
• Sound judgement and discretion with sensitive information.
• Proven ability to manage multiple assignments and collaborate with diverse stakeholders.
• Commitment to democracy and diversity; experience advancing democracy, election integrity, and the rule of law.
• Willingness to travel and occasional weeknights/weekends.

Responsabilidades

• Identify and respond to potential corruption, unethical activities, and misconduct by government officials.
• Prepare administrative complaints, regulatory comments, and FOIA requests, including Hatch Act and federal laws.
• Assist in legislative and policy reform, conduct research, draft letters, and prepare hearings materials.
• Produce high-quality written content for policy reports, op-eds, and summaries.
• Review financial disclosure reports for potential violations and conflicts of interest.
• Provide research support on corruption-related litigation for Litigation and Rapid Response teams.
• Translate matter updates for Communications and Fundraising teams, linking matters to broader goals.
• Collaborate with organizations across the political spectrum and coordinate working groups.
• Perform other duties as assigned.
