Job summary

National Audubon Society in Florida seeks a Science Specialist to serve as the lead scientific advisor on Lake Okeechobee and related restoration, water management, and wildlife conservation initiatives. The position is remote in the Southern Orlando or West Palm Beach area, with possible relocation to nearby counties and hybrid office days.

The role supports Audubon’s conservation priorities, policy development, and outreach while coordinating with the Everglades program and external partners.

Qualifications

• Advanced degree (MS or PhD preferred) in ecology, hydrology, environmental science, fisheries, wildlife biology, natural resource management, or related field; at least 5 years of work experience.
• Strong knowledge of Lake Okeechobee ecology, Everglades restoration, and Florida environmental policy is preferred.
• Experience interpreting scientific data, ecological monitoring results, hydrologic information, and restoration planning documents.
• Experience working with agencies such as the South Florida Water Management District, US Army Corps of Engineers, FWC and DEP.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills for technical and non-technical audiences.

Responsibilities

• Evaluate ecological conditions of Lake Okeechobee and the Northern Everglades.
• Predict future needs of Lake Okeechobee and the Northern Everglades.
• Inform Audubon policy proposals for restoration project designs and operations.
• Evaluate effectiveness of restoration projects and regulatory initiatives.
• Translate complex scientific information into actionable recommendations for decision makers.
