Smart Working, a remote-first company, is seeking a Rust Software Engineer to help design a proof-generating VM for RISC-V Linux programs. This role offers autonomy, impact, and work with cryptographic verification in a Web3-oriented environment.

Qualifications

• Hands-on software engineering in low-level/system contexts.
• Rust production experience in performance-critical environments.
• Strong CS fundamentals: algorithms, data structures, concurrency.
• Ability to reason about large systems and break problems into manageable parts.
• Experience with performance-critical or systems-level software.
• Clear written and verbal technical communication.
• Autonomy with ownership in a fast-moving crypto-native setting.

Responsibilities

• Design and implement core components of a proof-generating VM for RISC-V Linux programs.
• Build and optimise performance-critical systems with a focus on correctness and determinism.
• Apply systems programming to improve execution efficiency, reliability, and scalability.
• Contribute to the design of commitment and proof schemes, ensuring correctness and verifiability.
• Develop SDKs and tooling to support other engineers and external developers.
• Break down complex, large-scale engineering problems into clear, tractable components.
• Participate in architectural discussions and guide key technical and design decisions.
• Collaborate closely with other engineers in a fast-paced, research-driven environment.
• Communicate complex technical concepts clearly in writing, verbally, and via whiteboarding.
• Continuously identify opportunities to improve system performance, reliability, and developer experience.
